Or, when you’re just sat there, unable to move because your todo list is so long you have no idea where to begin and all motivation is lost. Get to the bottom of it

What’s really bugging you? What’s really stopping you from completing that goal you’ve set yourself? Step back, assess the situation and find the root of your problems. You might find that actually, it’s not Pauline from Accounts whose dampening your positive vibe with negativity, but actually the fact that you didn’t get enough sleep last night and simply don’t have the energy to put your all into it. In that case, go get yourself a latte and a KitKat and get to it! (And apologise to Pauline for hiding her biro.)

Put it in perspective

OK, so your todo list is pretty long, or that scary presentation you have to prepare for tomorrow is quite a big deal, but is your life at stake? No. Will you kill anyone? No. Take a moment to add a little perspective to your day, read a few news stories, take a walk and think about all the good things in your life. Suddenly, that mammoth job that’s waiting for you back home or in the office won’t seem like such a big deal.

Give yourself a little space

So maybe the reason you’re feeling like such a Negative Nelly is because everybody else around you is being so bloomin’ negative too. That means it’s time for a change of scenery. Don’t let others project their negativity onto you, take a break and go and work or think or breathe by yourself for a while. You don’t need them, you need peace and quiet, and cake. And maybe some wine.

Help someone else

This might seem like you’re putting off the task at hand, but actually, you’ll find that taking a moment away from your own problems and helping someone else will help you in the long run. Not only does it give you the opportunity to distract yourself from your negative thoughts and briefly forget about that thing you were worrying about, but helping someone else will make you feel good and offer you some organic positive vibes.

Don’t play the victim

Why are you feeling so sorry for yourself? Take some responsibility for your life. You put yourself in this situation. Working overtime to save for a holiday? Struggling to save money because you keep spending it on champagne? Putting up with your horrendous boss because you know there will be a promotion at the end of it? Then you’re not a victim, you’re a fighter, so act like one!
